At a time when digital forms of information and entertainment gaining in importance, there is a lot of worried talk about the death of reading & obsolescence of the physical

Book clubs are a fantastic way to meet new people, read great books, and share opinions about what you read. Here are some book clubs that are already running at Alaska’s libraries.

Discussion Groups:
**Science Books: led by (UAF Geology professor) . In its tenth year! Staff create flyers, put notices in community papers, and coordinate the distribution of books. Meets Tuesday nights, once a month.

**Great Books: moderated by Librarian, meets once a month.

**Fantasy Books: started and moderated by a fantasy lover, also meets once a month.

**Parent-Child: for children and an "adult reading partner," started by librarian. This group reads mostly fiction and meets every-other week.

**Mother-Daughter Groups: three independent groups of mother/daughter pairs meet once a month at the library for book discussion.

**Adults Reading Children’s Books: meets one Saturday morning a month at the downtown library. This group is made up of teachers, librarians, parents, and writers who gather to briefly talk to each other about what they have been reading individually. Other topics for discussion have included trends in children’s literature and various articles of interest; the group also writes letters to authors on occasion

Cradle Club is for babies up to 18 months old and their parents / carers (older brothers and sisters welcome).

The group is a great way to meet other parents and carers. Babies are sociable and enjoy the company of others too! It will give you time to play, have fun, share stories, sing and laugh with your baby. Quality equipment including toys and a bottle warmer are provided.

Special activities may be arranged for baby massage, healthy eating, and informal visits from a health visitor, midwife and other community workers.

Chatterbooks clubs are for eight to 13 year olds and meet once a month The clubs aim to inspire young people to read adventurously, develop confidence in expressing their opinions, and have fun sharing in book-related activities.  They also get a new item each month to put into their pack, such as a reading diary, a bookmark, stickers, or a fortune-teller game to see what kind of reader they are.

I’ve painted a rather bleak picture, but I really do enjoy receiving my books through the post every month. I have rejoined thesite several times, which means that I am quite a loyal customer. I know the pros and cons, and I keep coming back for more, so it isn’t all-bad. I think that it is a clever marketing ploy, getting you to buy 6 books at a really bargain price, then scraping their money back by charging you for other books. It allows you to build up a collection of hard back books which are considerably cheaper than if you buy them in the high street. However, if you just read them, then store them away unnoticed, then I would probably recommend waiting until them come onto paperback.
